Camps: why it’s important, how coaches eval, is it a money grab?

Camps play a crucial role in skill development, provide opportunities for coaches to assess talent, and are not just about making money. As recruits camps this summer, parents and athletes need to evaluate their decision even to do so. There are many factors and the process of what goes on at camps can be confusing. So we are here to help you clear a few things up because as many of you know already some of these camps can be “money grabs” or are they?

As recruits camps this summer, parents and athletes need to evaluate their decision even to do so. There are many factors and the process of what goes on at camps can be confusing. So we are here to help you clear a few things up because as many of you know already some of these camps can be “money grabs” or are they?

Here are a few things to consider(not in order):

  • Is it within my budget to pay for camps with travel costs, camp expenses, time off from work, hotels, flights, gas, etc.?
  • Have they shown any interest in my son? Have they contacted my son via DM, text, or phone call? Or reached out to the High School Coaches?
  • Are multiple staff members following my son on X(Twitter)?
  • Which camps should I attend?
  • Are they (i.e. university xyz) just trying to get my money?

If the answers to the first three questions are ‘yes’ then the question of  “Which camps should I attend?” should subsequently be answered with a yes as well. If members of the coaching staff have shown interest in your athlete and they want you to come to camp then they most likely want to see him in person to pass the “eye test”

As I put out on my X(Twitter) page recently, here is what college coaches evaluate athletes on when they attend camps(attached if you cannot see the paste below):

Hopefully, this answers the question if the camp(s) are just a money grab, college coaches may just want to get eyes on your athlete, size them up, confirm size, character, and competitive abilities. So is it worth it to attend camps? Short answer – yes. However, choose to go where the colleges have shown interest in your son.

At Diversion Sports we help out athletes and parents with taking a very targeted approach based on their top school’s list of 25-50. We calculate many factors such as a school’s current roster and many other factors.

Hopefully, this helped you a little bit, if you plan to camp this summer save travels and go compete!
